    The Effectiveness of Cognitive Strategy to Improve Students’ Listening Comprehension Achievement

    Listening plays an important part of the learning process because it can help students understand and respond according to the material presented by the teacher. According to Lafi (2001) a highly integrative talent is listening comprehension. It is crucial to the process of learning or acquiring a language since it helps the development of other language abilities. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out the use of cognitive strategies on students' listening comprehension and also to find the average difference between students who are taught by using cognitive strategies and those who are not. The purpose of this study is to see how the cognitive process affects students' progress in listening comprehension. This research uses quantitative methods with a research sample used as many as 67 people. 33 people in the experimental class and 34 people in the control class who are students from SMP N 38 Palembang using purposive sampling. Based on the results of research conducted by researcher, researcher found a significant difference in student learning outcomes in classes taught using cognitive strategy methods (experimental class) and classes that were not taught using cognitive strategy methods (control class). Testing to find problems in this study using the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. In conclusion, cognitive strategies allow students, especially in SMP N 38 Palembang to effectively improve their listening skills

    Students’ Perception of Teachers’ Bilingual Language Use in EFL Classroom

    ABSTRACTStudents’ perception of teachers’ bilingual language use was based on bilingual approach in English language learning in which the students’ first language ( L1 ) is combined with the target language ( L2 ) being studied to be a language instruction used by the teacher to conduct an English classroom.  The purpose of this research was to find out the students’ perception toward the use of Bilingual language they are English and Indonesian by the teacher in EFL classroom. This research was a qualitative approach with the forty students as the sample. In collecting the data, questionnaire was used. The data was analyzed through Likert Scale in order to find out students’ perception of teachers’ bilingual language use in EFL classroom. Based on the result of data analysis and interpretation of the data gained from questionnaire, it indicates that students show their positive perceptions to the use of bilingual language done by the teacher as language instruction in their English classroom. Finally, the result of the research would give a contribution to the improvement of the classroom language instruction used by the teacher in an English language learning classroom particularly for teaching the students who were learning English as a foreign language ( EFL ).Keyword : Bilingual, Students’ Perception, language use, EFL classroomABSTRAKPersepsi siswa tentang penggunaan dua bahasa oleh guru didasarkan pada pendekatan bilingual dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di mana bahasa pertama siswa ( L1 ) dikombinasikan dengan bahasa target (L2) yang dipelajari menjadi pengajaran bahasa yang digunakan oleh guru untuk melaksanakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan dua bahasa yaitu bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia oleh guru di kelas EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan empat puluh siswa sebagai sampel. Dalam mengumpulkan data, kuesioner digunakan. Data dianalisis melalui Skala Likert untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan dua bahasa oleh guru di kelas EFL. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data dan interpretasi data yang diperoleh dari kuesioner, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi positif  terhadap penggunaan dua bahasa yang dilakukan oleh guru sebagai bahasa pengantar di kelas bahasa Inggris.. Pada akhirnya, hasil penelitian diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada peningkatan pengajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas yang digunakan oleh guru di kelas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terutama untuk mengajar siswa yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing ( EFL ).Kata kunci : Dua bahasa, Persepsi Siswa, penggunaan bahasa, kelas EF

    In this globalization era, people have to communicate globally. English plays a very important role especially in international communication. It is used in various activities like education, business, politics and technology. Consequently, it is taught in Indonesia to provide supplementary knowledge for communication. The importance of learning English cannot be ignored, it is the greatest common language spoken all over the world. In addition, learning English is very important to increase knowledge and language ability. In Indonesia, English has been introduced at kindergarten school, as the development of the world globalization that demand English skill for all people from different nation in the world. Every school has learned English, there is no need to fear but urgent need for wise adaptation and negotiation so that English becomes a powerful tool for gaining tremendous and unlimited knowledge for all kinds of subjects learned at school. Teaching English to young learners is not as easy as imagined, the teachers is not only help the students to get knowledge, competences and morality, but also have to prepare everything’s need. The teachers have to use many strategies in teaching such as applying various strategies, media and game in order to keep students’ interest in learning English. In this research, quantitative research was used that aim to find out teachers’ strategies in teaching English to young learners. The population was all of the teachers at one of kindergartens in Palembang, and the sample was selected through simple random sampling technique. In collecting the data, interview and questionnaire were used, and then the data was analyzed through descriptive method in this research.     IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY OF THE ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT STUDY PROGRAM THROUGH BLOGS AT INDO GLOBAL MANDIRI UNIVERSITY PALEMBANG

    The aims of this study were to find out theprogress in students’ writing achievement after they were taught by using blogs, and to find out the significant difference in students’ writing achievement between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. The population of the study was all the students in Faculty of Economic at Indo Global Mandiri University in the academic year 2014/2015. The sample consisted of 40 students where 20 students for experimental group and 20 students for control group, and was selected by using purposive sampling. In order to get the data, a test was used. The data was obtained in the form of writing test. The test was given twice, to the experimental and control groups, as pre-test and post-test. The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test through SPSS program. The finding showed that (1) There were some progresses in students’ writing due to the use of blog during the teaching and learning activities, and (2) There was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. Key Words: Improving, Writing Ability, Blog

    The Effectiveness of E-Learning as Teaching Media in EFL Classroom

    ABSTRACTThis research was made based used non-equivalent control group design that was conducted University of Indo Global Mandiri Palembang. The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of e-learning as teaching media in EFL classroom. In this research, there were two different samples to be judged their writing achievement. First is experimental group which was given a treatment and second is control group which was not given any treatment. As data source, a test in written test was used in this research. Before starting the research, a pre-test was taken from both groups and two raters scored the students’ written tests based on rubric score. After implementing the treatment, both groups were given a post-test and the same raters scored their tests to know the significant improvement and significant difference between the scores of both goups. The results indicated that by using this technique, the students’ writing achievement was improved. It was shown from the mean scores of pre-test in experimental group that increased from 43,30 to be 77,20 in post-test. The significant difference of the post-test scores between both of experimental and control groups could be seen from the results of the t-obtained of both groups. It was considered higher than the t-table. Accordingly, it could be claimed that teaching writing by using e-learning brought about an improvement in students’ writing achievement. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan menerapkan e-learning. Dalam penelitian ini, ada dua sampel yang berbeda untuk dinilai pada kemampuan menulis siswa. Pertama adalah kelompok eksperimen yang diberi perlakuan dan yang kedua kelompok control yang tidak diberi perlakuan. Sebagai sumber data, tes dalam bentuk tertulis digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sebelum memulai penelitian, pre-test diambil dari kedua kelompok dan dua penilai menilai kemampuan berbicara siswa berdasarkan skor rubrik menulis. Setelah menerapkan pengajaran, kedua kelompok diberi post-test dan penilai yang sama menilai kemmpuan menulis siswa untuk mengetahui peningkatan yang signifikan dan perbedaan yang signifukan antara skor kedua kelompok. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa dengan menggunakan teknik ini, kemampuan menulis siswa meningkat. Hal itu di tunjukkan dari nilai rata-rata pre-test pada kelompok eksperimen yang meningkat dari 43,30 menjadi 77,20 pada saat post-test. Perbedaan yang signifikan pada saat post-test antara kedua kelompok eksperimen dan control dapat dilihat dari hasil t-hitung. Nilai tersebut dianggap lebih tinggi dari t-tabel. dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa mengajar kemampuan menulis dengan menggunakan e-learning meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa.     The Use of RAP Strategy in Improving Reading Comprehension Of EFL Students

    AbstractThe aim of the study was to find out whether there was a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using RAP strategy or not. The population was all the students of Information System at Indo Global Mandiri University. The sample consisted forty students which was selected by using Purpossive sampling. In collecting the data, a test was used and there was fifty items of multiple choice questions. The data was analyzed by using t-test (Paired Samples t-test). The findings showed that RAP strategy was significant in improving the EFL students’ reading comprehension achievement. It can be seen from the mean of the pre-test and post-test which shows that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension after being taught reading by using RAP Strategy. The students who were taught reading by using RAP Strategy had better higher achievement in comprehension after having the treatment. In conclusion, the use of reciprocal teaching strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension.Keywords : reading comprehension, RAP strategy AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan dari pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan dengan menggunakan strategi RAP atau tidak. Sampel dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari empat puluh siswa yang dipilih dengan menggunakan Purpossive sampling. Tes terdiri dari lima puluh pertanyaan pilihan ganda yang digunakan sebagai teknik untuk mengumpulkan data. Dalam penelitian ini, t-test digunakan sebagai teknik untuk menganalisa data (Paired Samples t-test). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa strategi RAP signifikan dalam meningkatkan pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa EFL. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil rata-rata pre-test dan post-test yang menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan membaca dengan menggunakan Strategi RAP. Siswa yang diajar membaca dengan menggunakan Strategi RAP memiliki pencapaian pemahaman yang lebih baik. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi pengajaran RAP dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.Kata kunci: pemahaman bacaan, strategi RA

    THE ADVANTAGES OF USING COMMUNICATION GAMES IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE

    Games promote learners’ interaction.Interaction comprises the nature of classroom pedagogy and classroom behavior. Pair or group work is one of the main ways to increase cooperation. Many games can be played in pairs or in small groups, thereby providing an opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills such as the skill of disagreeing politely or the skill of asking for help. In the classroom learners will definitely participate in the activities. Therefore, in groups or in pairs, they are more willing to ask questions, communicate and discuss topics with their partners and think creatively about how to use foreign language to achieve their goals. The competition in the games gives students a natural opportunity to work together and communicate with each other a lot.Games improve learners’ language acquisition.Thanks to the motivation and interaction created by games, students can acquire knowledge faster and more effectively than by other means. Games can stimulate and encourage students to participate in the activity since they naturally want to win. Apart from having fun, students are learning. They acquire a new language. Students begin to realize that they have to use the language if they want others to understand what they are saying.Furthermore,games can lower anxiety.     HIGH 5 STRATEGIES AS AN ALTERNATIVE TEACHING STRATEGY IN EFL CLASSROOM

    This study describes the use of High 5 Strategies in English Foreign Language classroom. As one of teaching strategies, High 5 strategies can help the students to tackle their reading. High 5 strategies consists of activating background knowledge, questioning, analyzing text structure, creating mental images, and summarizing. First, activating background knowledge is the important concept of reading that can help the students to connect what they already learned or knew before so that it allows the students to get a better understanding of what it is about. Second, question is also the important way for students to form questions that help them understand what to look for as they read. Then, the students need to understand the structure of the text that help them easier comprehend each part of paragraph in the text by analyzing the text structure. Next, creating mental image or visualizing is used to imagine the structure of the text that the students have known before, so as they read, they should also imagine how the structure is. Finally, the students summarize all important information that they already got using the previous strategies. High 5 strategies provide an opportunity for all the EFL students to activate their background knowledge and form question in their mind, analyze, visualize and summarize the reading.     THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS PERCEPTION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE TOWARDS ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    Online learning is a system based on formal teaching with the help of electronic devices and used internet connection to facilitates more flexible distance learning and a vast network to connect. Online learning has been carried out in universities in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the correlation between students' perceptions and academic performance towards the online learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic of English education study program students at Indo Global Mandiri University Palembang. quantitative method used in this study with a correlational design to analyze the data. The sample was students majoring in English Education intake 2018, 2019, and 2020. Seventy-eight students from three intakes of English Education students participated in this study. The data sources used by the researchers are graphs of student academic performance and a questionnaire. This research shows that student's academic performance is not much impacted by their perception of online learning. Based on Malik and Singh (2016) Academic performance can be influenced by internal and external factors, such as; Motivation, Economics, Social, and Family. Therefore, students, lecturers, and educational institutions must synergize in improving services, communication, and online-based education systems to benefit more from online learning systems
